Some brands like Mr. Cool offer DIY-friendly systems with pre-charged line sets that don't require an HVAC license. However, most mini splits require professional installation for proper refrigerant handling and to maintain warranty coverage.

SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) measures AC efficiency. The minimum for new units is 14 SEER. We recommend 16+ SEER for moderate climates and 18+ SEER for hot climates where AC runs frequently. Higher SEER costs more upfront but saves on energy bills.

Mini splits are among the most efficient AC options, typically costing $50-$150/month to operate in summer depending on usage, electricity rates, and system efficiency. They're often 20-30% cheaper to run than central air.

With proper maintenance: window ACs last 10-15 years, portable ACs 5-10 years, and mini splits/central AC 15-20 years. Factors affecting lifespan include usage frequency, maintenance, climate, and build quality.
